Methodology

Purpose and review status

The EntrSL Research Collection is a curated research library, not a systematic review, scoping review, meta-analysis, or PRISMA-compliant evidence synthesis. It is designed to support research and instructional design by identifying influential, methodologically informative, critical, and directly relevant literature. Inclusion does not imply that a paper validates EntrSL or any other EntrLabs framework.

The collection was curated by Joseph E. Iesue. Screening and appraisal were not independently duplicated, and disagreements were therefore not assessed. The bespoke appraisal rubric is a navigation aid; it has not been psychometrically validated and is not a substitute for a design-specific risk-of-bias or certainty-of-evidence instrument.

Source library and census

On 23 August 2026, the audit paginated every top-level Zotero item of type journalArticle without a collection, saved-search, tag, or keyword restriction. The census contained 9,924 journal articles. Abstracts were available for 7,620 records; 2,304 records without abstracts were necessarily screened from titles and available metadata, creating a greater risk of false exclusion.

Automated title-and-abstract screening identified 345 direct candidates, 279 near-scope records, and 9,300 records classified as out of scope, spanning 211 candidate journals. The complete ledger is retained privately to protect Zotero-derived research data. The corpus is bounded by the curator’s Zotero holdings and metadata quality as of the audit date; it is not a comprehensive search of bibliographic databases.

Screening concepts included service-learning, academic service-learning, community-engaged and community-based learning, experiential learning, work-integrated learning, learning-by-doing, entrepreneurship education, reflection, community partners, civic engagement, critical service-learning, and evidence syntheses. Automated screening created a candidate pool but did not determine final inclusion.

Selection and appraisal

The final 25 were selected for direct relevance, methodological informativeness, conceptual importance, stakeholder coverage, and usefulness for EntrSL research and design. Each paper receives two separate curator appraisals:

• EntrSL relevance (1–5): directness to service-learning, experiential-learning design, entrepreneurship, reflection, reciprocity, outcomes, or institutional practice.
• Evidence quality (1–5): fit and transparency of study design, sample or synthesis breadth, analytical quality, and inferential limits.

The dimensions are displayed separately. They are not a meta-analytic effect, certainty grade, risk-of-bias judgment, or claim that unlike methods are interchangeable. Full text was reviewed for 23 papers. Two records remain abstract/metadata-only and are explicitly flagged.

Journal context

Journal-level context is reported separately from article appraisal using OpenAlex Sources data retrieved on 23 August 2026:

• Two-year mean citedness: OpenAlex’s recent source-level mean citation measure.
• h-index: OpenAlex’s cumulative source-level h-index.
• Upper-quartile source within this collection: at or above the 75th percentile of two-year mean citedness among the 21 journals represented by the 25 selected papers (threshold 7.007619).

This collection-specific indicator is provided for context only. Because citation practices vary across fields, it should not be interpreted as a general journal ranking or as a judgment of an individual article. It does not influence either appraisal dimension.

Interpretive limitations

• The source corpus reflects one Zotero library rather than a multi-database search strategy.
• Automated screening may miss relevant papers, particularly records without abstracts or using different terminology.
• A single curator made inclusion and appraisal decisions; no inter-rater reliability estimate is available.
• The rubric is purpose-built and unvalidated, and no uniform risk-of-bias instrument was applied across heterogeneous designs.
• Citation-based journal indicators differ by discipline, publication age, and database coverage.
• The collection intentionally combines direct EntrSL research with transferable service-learning and experiential-learning scholarship; those categories should not be conflated.
• The 25-paper limit is editorial, not a claim that these are the definitive or universally strongest papers in the field.

Reproducibility and privacy

The immutable working inputs were read through Zotero’s local API, and Zotero was not modified. Public artifacts include the curated analyses, aggregate screening counts, journal-metric snapshot, bibliography, and methodology. The complete screening ledger, Zotero snapshots, cached abstracts, and full-text files remain private.
